This Learning Community is a partnership between the Patient Insight Institute and SIREN to integrate a patient voice and perspective into existing and new projects focused on the intersection of social needs and healthcare

About us…

This subcommittee, a collaboration with Social Interventions Research and Evaluation Network (SIREN), aims to integrate patient perspectives into both existing and new research projects at the intersection of social needs and healthcare. SIREN, based at the University of California, San Francisco, is a national initiative dedicated to improving health and health equity by accelerating and disseminating high-quality research on healthcare strategies that address social conditions. Researchers are invited to this subcommittee to discuss social needs and equity-focused research projects and events.

  • Social Interventions Research and Evaluation Network (SIREN) is a research acceleration and dissemination initiative at the University of California, San Francisco. Our mission is to improve health and health equity by advancing high quality research on health care sector strategies to improve social conditions.

  • A sub-committee of 15 of the Institute’s Experts by Experience (ExE) convene 5 times a year with select researchers to discuss social needs and equity related research projects and events. Our patient and caregiver ExEs provide valuable insights to create, refine, and drive research initiatives.

ExE members of the Social Need & Equity Learning Community reviewed abstracts for a Health Services Research special issue. Our Director, Rebekah Angove, served as a guest editor and co-authored a commentary for the issue with Danielle Hessler and Yuri Cartier at SIREN, highlighting the importance of integrating lived expertise into academic publishing. The commentary emphasizes engaging community members as peer reviewers and underscores that those most impacted by social care needs are essential partners in advancing equitable research.

Our partnership with SIREN brings patient voices more directly into research focused on the intersection of social needs and healthcare. By engaging our Social Needs and Equity Committee—made up of patients and community members—we help ensure that lived experience informs not only how research is conducted, but also how it is reviewed, interpreted, and shared.

This project is one example of how we are working to make research more grounded in real-world perspectives, ultimately strengthening its relevance, equity, and impact.
